Meet Glenn McConnell

Glenn McConnell was born December 11,
1947 in Charleston, and is a lifelong resident of the Charleston area. He was educated in Charleston area public schools and is a 1965 graduate of Saint Paul’s High School.

After graduating from high school, McConnell enrolled in the College of Charleston. While attending the College of Charleston, he was active in Pi Kappa Phi fraternity, served in student government, and was elected president of the student body.

Upon graduation from the College of Charleston in 1969, McConnell continued his studies by pursuing a law degree at the University of South Carolina. He received his Juris Doctorate in 1972. He has also received an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from the University of Charleston in 1999, an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from the Citadel in 2000, an Honorary Doctorate of Humanities from Francis Marion University in 2001, and an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from the Medical University of South Carolina in 2005.

Professionally, Glenn McConnell started his legal career by working for two years as a staff attorney with the Neighborhood Legal Assistance Program. He also served as a Labor Management Relations Specialist with the Charleston Naval Shipyard and then went into private practice. He retired from active practice to manage a family business, CSA Galleries.

Glenn McConnell was elected to the South Carolina Senate in 1980 and has served as Chairman of the Rules Committee and is now Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, which handles over 40% of all legislation that comes before the Senate for consideration.
On January 9, 2001, McConnell was elected the first Republican President Pro Tempore of the South Carolina Senate since Reconstruction.

On March 13, McConnell was sworn in as South Carolina’s 89th Lieutenant Governor, the position he currently holds.
